Severe ALL Ties

Then the sailors tried to abandon the ship; they lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship. But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, “You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.” So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and let it drift away. (Acts 27:30-32 NLT)

When I read this I don't think about the conventional meaning. Most of the interpretations I've read say that this verse is about rational thinking not always paralleling God's plan. However, when I read this, the part that captures me is "cut the ropes". The soldiers were instructed to cut the ropes from something they were comfortable with as a means of survival in order to save their lives. 
This view resonates with me so much at the present time. Often times we hold on to things that we are used to in order to avoid the pain of severing ties. We don't pay attention to the fact that it is in the cutting of the excess that we are able to really live the way God wants us to. 
People can often times be our comfort. We refuse to get rid of the toxicity even when it's affecting our lives negatively. At times we let people tiptoe slowly out of our lives when we've been instructed to simply rid ourselves of them. God wants us to cut the ropes from toxic things we envision as comfortable in our lives so that we may really live. He's attempting to save our lives no matter how tightly we hold onto the fragments of what we know.
Cut the ties. God will provide, but you have to eliminate whatever he's telling you is life threatening in order to receive the blessings he has for you. If you hold on to what you're accustomed to having, he will create a way to force you to let it drift away. It is then that the ropes will be cut while simultaneously your eyes are opened.
